| Production of low-quality Robusta coffee is growing, and its low cost is driving many small producers of fine Arabica coffee out of business wherever coffee is sold as a “commodity” a product that is bought and sold only by price, not by quality or other factors. Poverty is increasing in many developing countries that have grown coffee for decades because the sale of coffee as a commodity does not reward their efforts to protect wildlife, distribute income equitably, and grow high-quality Arabica coffee. At La Amistad’s coffee hacienda and the surrounding communities, we combat this by producing some of the world’s finest coffee, protecting wildlife and natural habitats, using only organic production methods, and ensuring the equitable treatment of our workers and our coffee-producing neighbors. |
