- Birds: La Amistad Estate has planted a large number of bird-friendly trees and shrubs in all its cultivated areas. These plants provide an enormous quantity of food, nesting sites, roosts and shelter for migratory and resident birds. The birds contribute to maintaining the health of our coffee plantations by feeding on insects and other small animals that thrive in our plantations. In addition, the enormous, unbroken forest of La Amistad provides undisturbed habitat for many birds. This combination makes La Amistad one of the prime birding sites in Costa Rica (see our bird list, one of the most extensive in all of Costa Rica).

- Biodiversity: We are not only friendly to the birds, but our conservation efforts also host thousands of species that live in harmony with our organic agriculture activities. The large number and diversity of birds, mammals, insects and plants attest to the soundness of our practices. La Amistad has one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, and is visited by many scientists who come to study the rare and unusual species in our forest and the extraordinarily rich biological interactions in our plantations.

- Balance: We have achieved an extraordinary balance between nature and agriculture, not only between humans and nature, but also within the natural world itself. Our large populations of incredibly diverse life forms include plants, animals and microorganisms, all existing in equilibrium. Human intervention is unnecessary. Our soils are kept soft, fertile and rich in life by this balance.
