La Amistad is Socially Responsible

Our forest supplies pure water to the entire Coto Brus Canton; all three of the area’s aqueducts originate on our land. We supply gravel for road surfacing, as well as ensure that the local government continues to provide services and infrastructure to our neighboring village of Las Mellizas, which now has roads, a school, a clinic, a police station, telephones, and electricity.

We provide high-quality housing to our employees and pay good wages with all social protections to our workers. We comply with all labor and trade protocols required by certification programs for best practices in these areas. We pay the best possible prices for organic coffee to our neighbors and suppliers from the local community. The price differential can amount to double the market price for standard coffee in some years. Of course, we train these producers in organic techniques and help them achieve organic and shade-grown certification.

Our electricity is generated by a 300 kW damless hydroelectric plant that uses a small stream as its energy source. Our hot water is heated by solar panels. Most of the food for our kitchens comes from our organic agriculture production or is purchased from local villagers.

Coffee pulp and molasses are processed into organic fertilizer at our composting facility.
