Where is La Amistad Ecolodge, Rainforest Reserve, and Coffee Estate?
La Amistad Ecolodge, Rainforest Reserve and Coffee Estate is located at the extreme southern boundary of Costa Rica, bordering La Amistad International Park (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Panama. It forms part of UNESCO’s Amistad Biosphere Reserve and Las Tablas Protected Area. The land ranges in elevation from 1,200 to 3,100 meters (3,900 to 10,200 feet), giving it a cool, comfortable climate year-round. It is at 8º55-60’ north latitude and 82º44-52’ west longitude.
To the south, at its lowest point, the reserve borders the village of Las Mellizas, which was founded by the families that colonized this area in 1941 and is closely associated with La Amistad. At its highest point to the north, on the continental divide, we border the peak of Cerro Echandi the second highest peak in Costa Rica, directly on La Amistad Park, surrounding the north and east areas of the farm. We also border to the west Las Alturas Biological Station, all these areas are virtually unexplored.
It is five to six hours’ drive on good road from San José, Costa Rica, and two hours from David, Panama. We are one hour from the Panamanian resort of Volcán-Bambito and the Wilson (Las Cruces) Botanical Garden in Costa Rica, as well as two hours from Golfito, the entryway to Corcovado National Park and the Osa Peninsula.
